furries: please don't just say "hello"

Imagine calling someone on the phone, going "hello!" and then putting them on hold. That's what a bare "hi" or "hello" DM does - except now the other person doesn't even know why they're on hold, or for how long.

This happens a lot in the furry fandom. Two common patterns:

• The check-in ghost. Someone messages "hi" or "how are you" every couple of months, with nothing else. It feels like maintaining a friendship, but there's no actual conversation - just a occasional ping that goes nowhere.
• The boredom ping. Someone messages "hey" or "hello" daily (or more), not because they have something to say, but because they're bored. It's not a conversation starter, it's a reflex - and it puts the burden of generating substance on the other person.

Both patterns waste time and create a false sense of connection without real communication.

❌ Don't do this

Nobody said anything. Two people just spent four messages confirming that neither of them had anything to say - and if this happens every few weeks with no other contact, it's not really a friendship being maintained, it's just noise.

✅ Instead try this

Same amount of effort to type, but now there's an actual topic. The other person can respond whenever they're free, and the conversation has somewhere to go.

What to do instead

• Lead with the topic: "hey, did you end up going to that meetup?" beats "hi" every time.
• If you don't have a topic, that's fine - but don't send a message that's just a placeholder for one.
• If you're reaching out because you're bored, it's okay to just say that: "bored and thought of you, how's the suit coming along?" gives the other person something to respond to.
• Asking your real question up front also means the other person can answer async - they don't have to be sitting there staring at a lone "hello" wondering what you wanted.

This isn't about being blunt or rude - you can still be warm and friendly. It's about giving the other person something to actually respond to, instead of making them do the work of turning your "hello" into a conversation.
